ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROSPECTUS AND APPLICATION

About
The Molokai Arts Center offers several opportunities for artist residencies each year. A small island located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and part of the Hawaiian islands, Molokai provides a perfect backdrop to create, explore and experience a unique culture. The purpose of the MAC Artist in Residence program is to provide guest artists with a respite from daily responsibilities to enable them to create and concentrate on their work. This is a non-paid, volunteer position.

Housing Provided
Housing is provided free of charge. Each Artist in Residence will have a local host who can help the guest artist get acclimated to the area. When possible, the Molokai Arts Center will assist with transportation needs based on vehicle availability.

Studio Space Provided*
The Artist In Resident will have access to a studio space (*if available) located at a selected site.

Who May Apply
Residencies are considered in the disciplines of creative writing, visual arts, photography, sculpture, fiber arts, ceramics, music, dance, installation work, earthworks, and site-specific art. The selection committee will consider requests in light of suitability for our present facilities. Artists who are chosen are expected to make a public presentation to the community during their residency and an instructional class/workshop. Artists may be asked, but will not be required, to donate to the MAC one piece of work created during, or as a result of, their residency at the MAC. Donated work will be added to the MAC collection. Works in the collection become the property of the MAC. In the event that MAC decides to de-accession a work to contain the size of the permanent collection, MAC reserves the right to auction/sell such work to generate funds to directly support the organization.

What is Expected
Willingness to share your inspiration with others is a central tenet of the Artist-in-Residence Program. Resident artists are asked to present one public program during their residency and one instructional class/workshop. These presentations should be based on the artist’s work, experiences, and interests, and may include workshops, discussions, demonstrations, etc. All programs should be developed in consultation with the Executive Director and should be appropriate for general audiences.

Selecting Dates
The length of the residency can vary according to circumstances and the artist’s requests. Residency periods are generally about 2 weeks long.The MAC will not consider residency dates between February 1-March 15 and November 15-January 1.

How to Apply
Applications will only be accepted between April 15 through May 30.
-In addition to the proposal form, submit your resume and/or CV. (PDF file; 1MB maximum file size)
-For non-visual artists: 3 samples of your work ready to upload in a PDF file. Writers please submit poems, short stories, articles, published or unpublished. Musical composers please submit scores, audio files and/or performances. (1MB maximum file size)
-For visual artists: 6-8 images of your work in JPG, GIF, or PNG (1MB maximum file size per image 1260pixels on the long side or as close as possible).
-Artists who have websites are encouraged to submit their URL address.
-Follow-up if you do not receive an email receipt within a week of submission.
