The art of language goes beyond words and communicating them. Language influences our thought processes and reflects our culture. Writing allows these ideas and values to be preserved. The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is excited to have three opportunities for Molokai residents and visitors to be mentored and inspired by its current Artist in Residence, Lynnette Beers.

The public is invited to “Talk Story with Lynnette Beers” at the Molokai Public Library on Wednesday, June 26, at 5:30 pm. Lynnette, an author and professor of creative writing, literature, and composition, is currently working on her fourth novel. The MAC’s Artist in Residence program allows her the opportunity “to feel (her) father’s Hawaiian roots and get more in touch with Hawaiian culture” while giving our community the opportunity to engage in her work. She is the author of the novels Saving Sam and Just Beyond the Shining River and has just completed a third novel, titled Caught Inside. She will have her books available for purchase and signing. This ‘Talk Story’ event is free to the public.

Lynnette will also teach two workshops. The first workshop, “Writing A Memoir,” will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at Kualapu’u School, from 4:30-7:30 pm. Lynnette has a passion for “helping beginning writers find their voice, especially when writing autobiographical pieces.” Participants will be looking at short memoir pieces and doing writing exercises to help them write “with the whole person,” as Virginia Woolf would say, because “If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.” Cost is $15 (Members $12).  You can register for this workshop here.
In the second workshop, Lynnette will teach different ways to publish books. “How To Publish Your Work” will be held on Thursday, June 27, at Kualapu’u School, from 4:30-7:30pm. Cost is $15 (Members $12). You can register for this workshop here.
In addition to writing novels, Lynnette publishes short memoir pieces and academic papers.  As a member of the International Virginia Woolf Society, she has presented papers at conferences in the US and UK. Lynnette lives in Laguna Beach where she enjoys ocean swimming and mountain biking. The ocean has always inspired her as a writer. Join us and let Lynnette and the Molokai Arts Center help you find your own writing inspiration.
