Everyone loves getting mail!

On any given week, our artist in resident, Jamie Allen can send up to 5 homemade cards a week. She began her love affair with snail mail when she went off to college and continued the practice after she moved across the country to Hawai’i nine years ago.  She currently has several steady pen pals! Sending people mail is a more intimate way for her to stay connected to loved ones, near and far. By sending them a little piece of her art, Allen hopes that it will brighten their day. Taking time to create a homemade card, writing a message, and actually mailing it, is very rare these days when email, text, and social media is much more convenient. For her it is a personal way of showing someone you are thinking of them, that you care.

Come play around with paints, collage, and various materials to create your own postcards in a 2 hour workshop. This workshop is not an instructional workshop but rather just an opportunity to have fun, experiment with paint and collage, and talk story with our resident artist. She is excited to meet you all!

In addition to creating your own postcards, Jamie has asked if we could each create one postcard to send to the remaining residents of Kalaupapa. The idea of sending mail to the residents was a result of her seeing Kalaupapa from the Lookout and thinking the way she wanted to express compassion for them was by mailing them a card. She felt involving the community of Moloka’i through a postcard workshop would be one way to express our warmth. At the end of the day, we all feel a little more alive when we receive a handwritten letter for no other reason than a friendly hello. Let us spread the joy!
